Legacy of Peddapuram Silks :
Chowduwada estate Zamindars, Muppana brothers duo, Sri Somaraju garu and Sri Veerraju garu established a Silk factory ‘Sri Lakshmi Silk Manufacturing Works’ in Peddapuram in 1913. It was a sensation then as some of the equipment were imported from Germany and used to operate on electricity generated by DG sets. That time, Peddapuram was still not electrified and the streets used to be illuminated by oil lamps in the nights. About 1,000 weavers used to work in their silk factory then. They used to import raw silk from China and Japan via Kakinada sea port, process and get weaved on 1,000 handlooms. They had silk showrooms in all metro cities and used to sell silk goods across pan India and also used to export to Ceylon, Burma, Singapore, England, etc., and earned international recognition and fame. The silk goods weaved were of finest quality and used to produce Silk Sarees of worth as expensive as Rs 500/- each a century years ago. They were awarded with a Medal for their Sari that could fit in a match box at the ‘British Empire Exhibition’ held at Wembley, England in 1924. They received few other medals at several national exhibitions as well.
Father of the Nation Sri.Mahatma Gandhi visited Peddapuram on 2 occasions in 1929 & 1933. Gandhiji was very much impressed and surprised with the quality of silk goods produced and gave the title ‘Swadeshi Silk’.
